Debenhams Launches the First Divorce List
As a strange alternative to the traditional Wedding List, High Street giants have launched a Divorce list service where couples choose what items friends and family should get them after their split. Following the new craze of Divorce Parties and Divorce Cards, made famous by celebrities such as Jordan and Heather Mills the new service for Divorcee’s, launched this week.
The wedding list was traditionally a good way to help newlyweds stock their new home with basic goods. However since many 21st Century couples tend to live together before (and if ever) getting married, this service has become less popular.
On the other hand, when a couple separates or gets divorced, couples are expected to split the assets and in many cases one partner leaves the marital home having to start again almost from scratch. This leaves a need for these basics during what is typically a financially hard time.
Peter Moore, Head of Retail Services at Debenhams, said: “Divorcing can be an expensive time and registering for a Divorce Gift List means that family and friends can help the newly separated begin their new life.”
It does seem wrong to celebrate the end of a marriage or relationship, but I would feel happier to help a friend by spending money on something like a divorce list than going to a Divorce party.
Debenhams are expecting Divorcees to list items such as large screen HD TVs, computer consoles and non-iron shirts to help them readjust to the single lifestyle and get over their break up.
